Transients - Frontispiece

  1. TRANSIENTS: Frontispiece -A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears as the frontispiece in the book, "TRANSIENTS and Other Disquieting Stories," by Darrell Schweitzer, published by Ganley in 1993.

Whenever I drew a picture I tried to give it a look that was unique, not "typical". To achieve that in this drawing, I represented the bark on the foreground tree and the middle-ground tree with unusual swirling patterns, and gave the smaller background trees a theatrical stage design look with park lamp-light globes.

I have always thought that illustrations in a book or a magazine should not only be helpful representations for a story, they should also be of interest and an enjoyment unto themselves. That's how the artwork of illustrators like Finlay, Cartier, Bok, Lawrence, Freas, Emshwiller, and so many others impressed me. When I opened a magazine and looked at their illustrations, the stories didn't matter, I would read them later. For me, the illustrations alone could make the magazine worth the cost of buying it. And if the stories turned out to be wonderful too, that was a great issue, one to treasure! And that also goes for books.

And that's what I hoped I could do for any book or magazine in which my artwork appeared.
